Astral - Power Before Wisdom

    woman astral projecting

Some people have expressed that my article on Astral Projection was nifty and all, but it didn't cover HOW to astral project (as well as a lot more).    A group I am a member of "Vicious Circle" (Pun Intended) does 3-4 presentations per month on topics we are familiar (or more) with.    This month I was voted to be one of the presenters and I recorded my presentation (with permission of course).  Below is the Audio:     (Below THAT is my bullet point of notes)

    Astral Projection Bullets for Presentation
    (Audio Doesn't Follow this Completely)

    Forms

    • 2 Headed Projection

      • Here and There Sensation. Perception can be either or both from POV and/or relative.

      • Can be done very conscious and in self.

      • All behaviors of projection are possible, but harder to control and maintain due to distraction.

      • Most 2 headed is a Temporary experience to obtain specific information/experience with a return to self within .5-3 seconds. Many “visions” of the real world are quick 2 headed projections.

        • As you gain skill you will learn the feeling of your consciousness reaching the target

      • Can evolve into full Projection

    • Full Projection

      • Full projection is a complete release of consciousness from the needs, senses and perspective of the body and utilize your projected form for all perception and action. All behaviors are completely from the point of view of the

      • The body isn't really in danger because it is easy for your sub-conscious to demand your attention if needed. Your consciousness is seated in your body still, but your “projection” is wherever/whenever

    • OBE

      • Personal Experience was always a painless but terrifying releasing, but most people claim painful release

        • Release is terrifying because you are disconnecting from the manifestational will and protections you have due to being in body.

        • The Body CAN be possessed when you are not there and the act of separating seems to attract attention of entities who might be interested in

        • You CAN be disconnected and lose yourself.

        • You will have ONLY the astral and your will, which means that the common problems are amplified and you cannot lean on your physical consciousness/state as a crutch (which you can VERY much do in Projections)

Common Differences & Challenges: All of these differences and challenges can be mitigated/minimized by using body consciousness/will

    • Time is not linear

      • Watching a Movie vs Filming a Movie.

    • Space is not linear

      • Distance and Size is what you believe it is.

    • Same Space and Time can have Different Layers

    • Where you will is where you are

      • If you fail to will you will flutter with your thoughts and will of others

      • If you will yourself to stay some-where/when (Ground into the space/time/layer)

    • Details requires investment which requires decrease in lucidity

      • Lucidity is a disconnect from the story. A decision to transition from Role of Actor to role of Director. You CAN be a director & actor at the same time, but the balance is delicate. If you get TOO into the story you can forget to direct, but if you only direct you don't truly experience the story.

    •

    Where can you go

    • Inner Dream Space

      • You and Your Subconscious are in 100% control when exerted.

      • Entering another's inner dream space can be done directly, but involves a risk of target or their sub-conscious directing YOU in their story. When you are an actor in their dream space they can control your reality, when you start directing if they disagree you will disconnect.

      • Safer to enter exact duplicate of their dream space where you can interact with them. You can project

    • Astral

      • Astral Levels of “Reality”

        • Layers so close to the physical that photo level details are available

        • Cliché “psychic” levels with each level giving access to:

          • Metaphors of energetic patterns (which you can change)

            • Mental

            • Physical

            • Chi

            • Will/Habits/Addictions

            • Spiritual (Different Frequencies)

              • This is the difference between hanging out with their damned ancestors vs their enlightened

          • Possible but un-manifest possibilities/histories

        • Manifest Alternate Realities

          • All of THEIR astral layers

    Ways to get there:

    • 2 headed: Move your consciousness to that space/time/layer and start perceiving

      • You can either travel if you need or just “be there” at your discretion. The key issue is to will your center of self there.

        • I choose to split my consciousness and be in both places (or more) at once. Too much focus on projection and you do stuff like walking into walls, too little focus and you fail to do anything useful.

          • Because time/space is not linear you can get away with focusing on an interaction 2-3 seconds per minute and have the experience of the interaction be perceptionally linear for both parties.

            • Especially useful for interactions at scheduled times on the astral. You and they can do so whenever you choose and experience or re-experience moments of the interaction at any time.

      • I only realized in writing this, that I use it as my “3rd eye” to analyze and perform magicks on persons/places regardless of space/time/layers.

    • Intentional Sleeping Full Projection: Start a 2 headed projection as you are falling asleep. If you maintain will as you fall asleep the projection will become a full conscious projection. If you fail to maintain will you will either slip into a pre-directed dream space or experience a

    • Lucid Dreaming: Leave Inner Dream Space (If that is where you are)

    • Medication:

    • Meditation: 2 Headed that can lead to 1 Headed.

  • Astral vs Chi October 2021 Update

    Astral Dancing

My first teacher introduced me to Astral Magick and did a great job supporting me understanding the practical uses of it. The ability to effect people, animals and spirits without most people noticing is really neat. Exploring the limits and boundaries of doing so is also neat. There is a epic story-ness of Astral Magick that allows you to experience incredible adventure and have verification in your life of so much of your story.

That is of course also it's biggest problem. Astral Magick allows you to experience truthful story/experiences which are disconnected from consentual reality. It is possible to participate in a series of stories which have Astral truth, but very little connection with reality as most other people experience it. To make this even harder Astral Magick allows for group stories so that people in the group can confirm and verify to the point of having incredible experiences, miracles and more, but some of the more incredible experiences interact with consentual reality mostly through the shared myth...

Introducing unwilling outsiders into the Astral Story can result in the myth being challenged and the truth of the magick and story can be negated/ignored by losing the mythic story.

At a minimum this shows the Astral Story's inability to effect reality around people who actively refuse it. In the worst case the myth failing can cause some or all participants in the story to not only disconnect the Astral story from currently experienced consentual reality, but they may even re-contextualize their past experiences and utterly deny the legit magicks they encountered

As a curious mage I decided I wanted to explore chi work. Over the years I've done training to build chi and unlike astral once it gets to a certain point it's almost impossible to deny something cool is happening. I have a video I like to show people related to what chi can do. Magick so potent it can be recorded (Astral Magick cannot be).

I have had some cool results with it. I'll save the stories for another time, but one side effect I've encountered consistently is that I started being disconnected from my Astral Magick when I would do chi work.

Chi work requires a lot of maintenance (daily/weekly); much more than Astral Magick which you can ignore for weeks or months at a time. Chi has a feeling of solidity and weight that Astral Magick doesn't.

When I am not doing chi work I can tell by feel whether I'm doing effective astral magick, but chi's sense of weight is so strong in comparison that Astral Magick becomes hard to compare against imagining when I do chi work. The irony is that the Astral Magick has that mythic awe that makes magick fun and Chi is generally satisfying yet boring. At a basic level chi can be added to astral work to make it more solid/stable, but so far in my experiences advanced chi work is to astral work what driving a backhoe is to riding a bike.

Additionally if you screw up chi work you can have actual health problems much faster than if you screw up astral magick (Not universally, but a solid truism). I can tie some lower back problems directly into a way that I screwed up my chi-work in the past.

All of this together has resulted in about 18 years of Yo-Yo-ing in my practices between Astral Magick, Chi Magick, Psychic Magick, and Spirit Magick as well as shifting from basically not practicing to spurts of high activity.

A float in a sensory deprivation recently coupled with 3rd Circle+ Men's Group stuff (lots of new stuff to explain) retriggered me accessing my chi in ways I've ignored for many months. A few days later I was doing my regular astral blessing/shielding maintenance spells when I noticed something. I can actually tell imagining vs astral magick by watching how chi responds to it. This is VERY exciting for me. Coupled with learning how to change the way I was hurting my back with Chi Work, this means that hopefully I will be able to maintain a relationship with the mythic wonder of Astral Magick AND the solid potency of Chi at the same time.

More to come hopefully.   Gods... I literally have years of stuff to try to catch ya'll up on.  This is gonna be a crazy few months of writing/recording.

  • Creating, Flavoring and Using Balls of Power (or other shapes)

    a magic ball

I'm almost embarrassed to be writing this article. This is one of the most basic of the basic techniques. Do a search for "how to make a ball of energy" (or Chi/Qi/Power) and you'll find hundreds of articles where people attempt to teach this. I could probably save myself a lot of time by just linking to one of the better ones, but how would I steal their Google search positions if I did that? :-P

Ok... down to business. I believe in two different "kinds" of energy you'll commonly work with. Astral and Ether. You can Make Energy Balls out of both. Astral is a LOT easier for most people and what we're going to cover here. You can control Astral energy with Focused thought. Imagination often works too...

If you are reading this article because you don't know how to do this, likely you WANT to believe in magick, but don't yet. What I teach you here is going to help you decide what you want to believe more solidly. If you want to believe in magick, you will hear people's affirmative responses. If you want to disbelieve you'll hear people's negative responses. For most people this part of your magickal growth is the easiest to get stuck in... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

The Technique: Imagine a point of energy. Believe it's real.

    That's it.

As long as you believe. As long as you hold your thoughts on it, persons who are experienced at magick will be likely able to give you details about it.

Wait... details. It's a point of power... not much to say here. Let's change it then.

Technique 2: Imagine the point moves back and forth in a straight line, faster and faster until all you perceive is a solid line of power.

At this point there is actually something to it.   It has length.  People might be able to tell you how long it is.   Test them.  Make ones of different lengths and see if people can tell you how long they are.  Have them make ones of different lengths and try to see how long they are.

Or maybe you have to feel it; maybe you can “hear it”… Or maybe you “just know.”  Not everyone perceives things the same way.  Once you find your way AWESOME!   Who cares if you can’t see it?  If you move your hands through them and you can feel them GREAT!    The other senses will come later.  It can be argued that mages intentionally induce a form of Synesthesia in themselves in order to experience magick in the ways that they choose to.  I do know that I experience non-magickal Synesthesia now… I don’t know if I did before.  So consider yourself warned… Don’t practice magick if you don’t want to smell oranges when you see one.   Not everything is as pleasant as oranges: Shit. Vomit. Rotten Meat.

My wife just pointed out that if you’re smart you’ll learn to control it the opposite way…  You can turn off your sense of smell with the yucky things…   Guess I’m not smart enough yet.  Of course, I don’t have to change diapers all the time at work like she does…

At this point you’ve made a line of power.  Onward…

Technique 3: Spin the line of power faster and faster until it’s a disk of power.

To help my imagination I often prefer to actually “flick” the line to get it spinning.

Technique 4: Make the disk Flip like a coin faster and faster until it’s a ball of power.

A ball of power.  Here is where I’ve had hours of fun.   Somehow it’s easy to hold onto the form of a ball of power.  Most other shapes tend to start fading much faster as you release them from your thoughts.  A point of power blinks right out if you aren’t focused on it.

Balls of power are kind of like the Island of Stability at Elements 114-126.  While they will fade without care, they stick around long enough to play with them.  They also have enough form that most people can perceive them.  People can generally tell how large they are and where they are.  People can even tell you what flavor they are…

Technique 5: Believe that your Ball has a color, smell, texture, sound, idea or emotion “flavor.”

This right here is where you are going to get the best results.  Practice making balls of power and then putting qualities into them.  Then hand the ball to someone else.  There is a VERY good chance that they will be able to tell you about the qualities.   You’ll have the best results if you honor all of the different modalities of thought and put a memory into it.   If you can think of a warm day when you felt happy, heard birds chirping, and as you sat you smelled and stared at fresh cut grass; you’re honoring all of the modalities.   Someone will be able to tell you they see green, smell grass, someone else will hear birds chirping or feel warm.  Either way… you receive confirmation!

Creating and Flavoring Energy Balls is a very basic technique and yet a LOT of advanced magick is based off of it.  For example, years ago I was a security guard at a convention center.  There was a party with a couple thousand people in one room, but my job was to guard another room.  Simple right?

Well.. not quite.  You see.  On one end of the room were the only restrooms they had opened in the building. There was no tape telling people where to go, no signs saying where they should and shouldn’t be and this room also happened to be nice and quiet so people could come in to make and receive cell phone calls.

I was under strict orders to keep people going straight from the other room, into the restrooms and back.    The guy I relieved was exhausted and angry from trying to tell people again and again… “Sir, I need you to either go to the restroom or leave” and having them give him shit.   Many people liked to just walk in on the phone and head over to a quiet corner forcing us to run over and herd them away.

I decided I didn’t want to play this game.   I created barriers (literally out of a disk of power stretched into rectangles) only to find that people enjoyed walking in the energy.  Some would literally walk into the room… sidestep into a barrier and start walking the length of it before sidestepping and going to the restrooms.  Additionally if people weren’t going to the restroom a few would pause and talk at the edges, but others would just walk on through.   So I “flavored” the Barriers with a Rubbery Pushing back the harder people pushed them.

THAT was interesting to watch.   People would walk the edge of the barriers, some people would step into them, but it was interesting to watch how they would be pressed to return.  Literally.  We’re talking 99% of people would stay within 6 feet of the barriers in a 200 foot long room with 300 feet on either side.

Even when they felt like talking on the phone and going to the corner they would only push a barrier as far as they felt comfortable (avg. 4-6 ft) before standing there… and often the would slowly inch closer and closer back into the “green zone.”   After a bit I decided I didn’t want to have to provide the energy for the push back anymore so I made the barriers slightly vampiric.   They would drain energy of people who touched them.

HAHA!   At this point most people who wandered into them jumped right out… sometimes LITERALLY!  I had a couple hardcore, “I’m strong,” persons but I spent the rest of my night calmly entertained as I watched people go in a perfectly straight line, staying where they were supposed to without my having to say a word.

Be creative.  Sometimes the subtle magicks are more useful than attempts to express great power.

  • Going Out of Body and Gaining Experience with Astral Travel

artistic depiction of an astral experience
Going Out of Body and Gaining Experience with Astral Travel
I’m going to write this article backwards.  First I’m going to teach you rules of Astral Travel.  Then I will tell you how to go out of body.
On the Astral you are what you think
Ever wanted that perfect body?  Decide you have it on the astral and you do.    Your decision of who you are, is what you will be on the astral.   My personal favorite forms are either myself in wonderful shape or a 50’ long Red Dragon.  You CAN be other things; however, on the astral, your body shapes and is shaped by your thoughts.   If you focus on thinking a certain way, but want a different body you will be able to maintain it until you stop focusing on the body.
For example:  If I want to keep thinking like a man, but have the body of a woman, I can, but it takes focus to maintain the form.  However, if I am willing to get into “character” as a woman it is quite easy to keep the form.   You can learn a LOT by getting into different characters.  My personal favorites include a Tree, a Mountain, a Sparrow, a drop of water in a stream and a brown bear.
Things are more Detailed the more you get into Character
Everything on the astral is about belief.  Truth is whatever you believe it is.   Yes.  It is possible to die on the astral.  However, it is also possible to have bullets go flying right through you or catch them Neo style.   There is kind of a sweet spot I have found where I get to enjoy the experience of being in character, but stay aware that I’m the writer and director as well.  If I don’t like the part I change it.
One of the consequences of being out of character is that the details don’t tend to be there.  For example, if I am in complete writer mode for a sex scene on the astral I don’t tend to feel my partner(s) or smell them in the moment.  It’s more like I remember the experience.  If you want to immerse yourself in something you can, but you trade the power to change things for the details and intimacy of the experience.  BE VERY CAREFUL what you immerse yourself in.  Dying is a hard thing to return from even here.
On the astral the story is what you choose (if you choose)
A nice option is to script a situation and then immerse yourself in it.  For example, I decide I would like to experience flying through the air as a winged version of myself.  If that is all that I define, the experience will start out as this and as I get into character it will begin taking form and flow of its own.  For example, I once started exactly this. After flying fine on my own for a while, I ended up meeting a woman friend of mine who I routinely interact with on the astral.  After talking and flying with her for a while we ended up flying down and through a portal into a different reality.  This one was STUNNINGLY beautiful.  It was like going from effortlessly flying above a scrub-brush desert to suddenly flying over the northwestern coast of Ireland.  Here I noticed that it was harder to fly and I needed thermals and willpower to keep myself up.
My lady friend and I separated while exploring this place only to find that there was a religious order of monks out to destroy “spirits and evil magics” who had seen the two of us flying and were trying to find us.   It was so real I could tell you just how the monks smelled.   I went looking for the portal we came through and was having a very hard time seeing it.  Whereas in the previous reality it was clear and obvious, here it was like it was a hard to see crease in the fabric of space…
…The story went on.  At this point I was totally immersed in it.  I forgot that I had another life to return to.  This was my reality.   When I returned through the portal I remembered myself again and returned.
You CAN experience anything, but it takes a lot of work to craft something very detailed and intricate.   Each detail is a decision; When you’re detailing a room, that’s a whole lot of decisions.   Obviously a whole world is countless decisions.  Most people end up learning to specify a lot of it and then letting go and trusting in spirit to create the rest.  Usually we will end up “auto-creating” similar challenges to ones we are facing in real life.  The nice thing is that this gives us an opportunity to experience the whole circumstance from a new point of view and we often gain new understandings that empower us to overcome these challenges in our Day to Day Lives.
On the Astral, Time is more a guideline than a Law
We live our lives like characters in a Movie being played on the big screen.  We act everything out linearly; Scene 1, Scene 2 and so on.
The Astral plane is kind of like being on the set of a movie.  There are a lot of distractions, it’s easy to get out of character and they don’t always shoot the Scenes linearly.  It is perfectly possible to experience a touching relationship moment with someone there before you meet them.
    Remote Viewing
Once you are out of body choose a reality, time, place and point of view and then step into character.   Again… the more into character you can get, the more you can perceive the details that character could perceive.   Unfortunately it’s really hard to get into character as someone else you don’t really understand. Unfortunately, if you want to be animal, vegetable or mineral you perceive things as they do and the fly on the wall really doesn’t really understand or care much about what the humans in the room are doing.
Likely you will want to stay out of the story and just be an incorporeal watcher.  This has limitations with perceiving details:
    - Time acts like it’s in stop-motion.
    - Physical items with little energy in them don’t exist solidly or at all.
    - You only hear Snippets vs. Whole Conversations.
    - Everything tends to “feel like” something.  We can remote view a moment and a place, but instead of - clearly seeing a statue of Thomas Jefferson in the middle of the room it tends to “feel like” something solid, heavy, smart, not living, respectable and like it’s looking over the room.   The more carefully we “feel” it, the more clear our understanding of it becomes.

What to do if you die
As I posted in another article, I have experienced death on the Astral.  I think that one of the major ways it differed from death on this plane is that my body here was still in good shape.   If I get shot here and die it’s a lot harder to return because the body is damaged to where it has a hard time keeping everything together.  When I died there, I disconnected and went off, but the body was still here in good shape waiting for me to return.
The Experience:  As I said in “How to Survive Being Possessed” I was cocky to an instructor on the astral and he knocked me silly with a pretty cool trick before stabbing me through the gut and killing me.  After he killed me I actually exited my Astral Body and did the classic floating over it thinking… “wow.”
Knowing that I needed to move on, I let go and everything lost form.  My reality dissolved into floating amid light in complete and utter peace.   The living have no idea how much our drive to survive is a constant pressure against us.  Imagine you live your life with a jet engine going off in your face and then suddenly you are in a calm meadow.  That doesn’t even come close to expressing how much un-peace we experience here in comparison.   I knew I could have or experience anything, but there was no need.  With no need, it’s easy to stop being Separate.   Just let go.  Float.  Be.  Time stopped existing.
Suddenly I felt fear: fear that I was ceasing to exist.   I knew I had choices.   I could let go and be in the light, I could move on to a new life or I could return.   I chose to return.   And in choosing, it just happened.   I formed a new astral body, flew it back into my physical body and woke up.
    Other Issues
Some people have trouble with reality flipping around as their thoughts wander.  There’s a bit of a trick to this.  Your astral experience responds to belief more than thought.   Choose your beliefs and hold onto them, then think your thoughts lightly.  Kind of the difference between thoughts you speak and thoughts you think quietly.  Once you are holding onto your current astral location with your belief it’s easy to think your thoughts and begin getting a handle on the difference between thinking and believing.
Some people believe in a Silver Cord between the “soul” and the body when projecting.  I’ve personally experienced one on a couple of my trips, while it didn’t exist for others.   Some people believe that it’s the only thing connecting you to your body and if it’s cut you die.   As those people wish I suppose.   I DID experience a case where I had the cord, it got cut and I freaked for a moment before I realized it was kind of like climbing and having my safety cord get cut. If I’m climbing properly the safety line is just a backup and isn’t getting used anyway.  I personally have noticed that my thoughts tend to draw me more completely back to my body.   I choose to be in my body and I am.  Plus the cord gets in the way of immersing yourself in other experiences.  It’s probably a good idea to keep the cord when you’re new at this, but try to practice your astral work without relying on it.  It IS kinda cool to tug on someone else’s cord and watch them go flying back into their body or even use your cord to do a fast return, but there ARE other ways.  :-)

How to Go out of Body
There are pretty much two ways to go astral.  One is to just project and the other one is to actually step out of your body.
    Projecting
T o project you need to literally “project yourself” somewhere.   You don’t have to form a full body to do so.   Literally it is like splitting your focus.   Ignore the part of you that is in the body and perceive yourself outside the body.   As you gain skill, you start being able to perceive things from that point of view.  This is the trick wanna-be poker cheaters use in stories.  The problem is that all of the rules of incorporeal existence are there.   So unless you charged each card with serious energy it will be hard to tell which card is which.
It is much easier to project yourself out of this reality.  Most people call this day-dreaming if you aren’t controlling your actions.  In truth it will probably take you a while to realize the difference between projecting inside to have your fantasies and projecting outside.   If you want to prove to yourself that you are projecting outside, there is a wonderful technique:
Draw a grid at the bottom of a Shoebox.  Then take 3 Items of very different size, shape, material and so on and put them into this box.  Put the lid on, shake the box and put it down.   Then project yourself out and into the box.  I recommend intentionally flying top down to look in the box while projecting.  While incorporeal you aren’t limited by the top because you can go right through it. Of course you are limited by the standard Remote Projection rules above.   Return to your body and write down the details.   Practice this for a while.   It’s amazing how accurate you can get.  :-)

Stepping Out for a Spirit Walk
I’m of two minds here.  On one hand many of us do this accidentally once in a while as we sleep.  On the other hand this is a GREAT way to have your body possessed.
The imagery I tend to use is we are spirits who have a special body and lots of practice using it.   I consider it my “Mech”  (A giant robot used for war in science fiction).   My spirit gets in, grabs the controls and the body starts moving.   For the vast majority of my human life I have been in the cockpit of this Body.  Normally when I astral project I split my focus to do something else, but I still keep a hand on the controls.
It is possible however, to let go of the controls and exit the body.   This can be a bit scary since most of us only know existing in the body.  Additionally, when projecting, the act of returning to the body is as simple as letting go of the projection.  This is why most people wake up when they “die” in dreams.   They stopped projecting and BAM, were back in their bodies.   When you actually step out, this doesn’t happen.  However, Spirit Walking allows you to perceive your Out of Body experience more fully.  It’s easier to understand what you are seeing or hearing, it’s easier to stay where you are, and it’s much easier to play a character without having to become them.   I’ve never tried possessing someone while astral projecting (makes a note for later), but I’m quite confident that when you step out of body you can possess someone or something.
For this purpose I am defining possession as: Going Astral, retaining your identity and entering someone else’s body to access and/or influence their perceptions and experiences (IT IS possible to possess someone’s astral body by the way).  Think of possessing other persons bodies while spirit walking, as stepping into their bodies cockpit and either just watching or actually screwing with the controls.  If you were a complete ass you could kick them out, but hopefully for them you aren’t…
I would strongly recommend that once you start intentionally exiting your body you should make a habit of creating a safe space before you sleep.  You have increased your chances of exiting your body as you sleep and it SUCKS coming back to your body to find it occupied.
If you are going to intentionally exit your body DEFINITELY make a safe space.  My personal favorite is a physically drawn circle (could be my finger on the dirt or carpet), however I know others who use incense and sound to help them.   Some shamanic paths prefer using tools and/or help to guide their return to their body.   I recommend you try to get away from needing those tools as quickly as possible.  Self Navigation is FAR less prone to failure.  To me an experienced spirit walker worrying about someone else helping them find their way back is just silly. It shows that they were taught to fear and haven’t overcome the fear yet.
I’d like to point out that a safe space is more than a good safety backup.   A couple years back I liked to do silly stuff like go Ghost Hunting.   Long Story Short a ghost tricked me into agreeing to step out of my body to “guide it to the light.”  Luckily I had read about a simple protection method for when one is spirit walking/astral projecting/whatever. So before I exited my body I cut a circle around myself with my athame in the dirt and stepped out.
The recommendation was that after you cut the circle and exit your body, you should stay in the circle until you see your spirit guide.   I didn't have far to look. Right outside the circle I saw two things: The ghost in all its vicious blood red and black, and a coyote glaring at me and gesturing with its head. The coyote told me quite clearly. "Get back in your body. This spirit is NOT what you think it is. If you leave that circle without your body you will be in trouble."

Shocked and humbled I re-entered my body.  I’ll post the full version of this story later, but suffice it to say that the circle probably saved my life that night.

I’m writing this article backwards.

When I returned through the portal, I remembered myself again and returned.

Additionally, if you want to be animal, vegetable or mineral you perceive things as they do; the fly on the wall really doesn’t really care or understand about what the humans in the room are doing.

Likely you will want to stay out of the story and just be an incorporeal watcher.  This has limitations with perceiving details:

    1. Time acts like it’s in stop-motion.
    2. Physical items with little energy in them don’t exist solidly or at all.
    3. You only hear Snippets vs.

The Experience:  As I said in “How to Survive Being Rolled and Possessed” I was cocky to an instructor on the astral and he knocked me silly with a pretty cool trick before stabbing me through the gut and killing me.

    Projecting
To project you need to literally “project yourself” somewhere.

The imagery I tend to use is that we are spirits who have a special body and lots of practice using it.

When projecting, the act of returning to the body is as simple as letting go of the projection.

  • How to Open your Third Eye

    hooded woman opening third eye

Once upon a time, a little boy was born.  This little boy saw things that adults didn’t see. He’d watch a spirit push his Mommy and she’d get up to smoke a cigarette.   He’d watch his Sister’s Aura when she was scared and learn to get scared too.

The Little Boy grew up.  Around age three he learned how to speak enough to start comparing what he saw to what other people saw.  It took him a while to learn that Mommy didn’t see the same stuff as him, but he didn’t have a word for spirit so he just learned to keep quiet about things that mommy didn’t see.

He grew up some more.  About 6 years old he still saw weird things sometimes, but he was told that he was imagining it. The imaginings were pretty vivid and helped him sometimes so he kept seeing them though.

For the next couple years he played with the imaginings more consciously.  He learned that he could create the imaginings. He’d imagine a magick sword and he’d have one.  He had imaginary friends and they played with him too.   Sometimes they even taught him things.

Now, before he was 8-10 years old his friends would imagine along with him.  They’d have huge adventures where everyone saw the same thing. Sure they’d argue about details, but usually they’d all agree in the end.  However, little by little they stopped imagining along. Little by little they told him that he was just imagining and to stop being such a little kid (because that’s what other people had told them).   So little by little he stopped seeing the imaginings. He told himself they weren’t real. The Little Boy learned to only see things that everyone else could see as he grew up.

One day he learned about this neat thing called the 3rd eye.  He thought it sounded pretty cool to see, hear and feel Auras and Spirits, so the now not-so-little boy decided to learn to open it.   People gave him lots of advice, Spells and tricks here and there.  However, everything he kept doing seemed too much like imagining. It couldn’t be real.  He was JUST imagining things.  He told himself that he had to keep looking or that maybe it was all a fantastic lie… because he shouldn’t imagine things and act as if they were real!

    The Lie of JUST Imagining
There is a story that when Columbus’s ships were sailing into harbor, the Indians couldn’t see them because their minds couldn’t comprehend them.   Now I’m not sure if there is any truth to this story, but it does help share the challenge of opening one’s third eye.

You’ve been trained since an early age to ONLY believe in what everyone else can see. However, the astral isn’t just this place you can go to in a trance or when you sleep.   Think of reality as an onion with many different layers to it. Some of these layers interact with the physical a little and some don’t really interact at all.

Our Physical eyes can’t see these other layers, but your spirit and/or your energy body can.  However, our mind can only process information in certain ways.  Just as we have to learn to understand that letters can form words which turn into ideas, our minds have to learn that “this astral event has THAT meaning and consequence.”  Additionally, our mind has the challenge of learning how to convey this information to us in a form we can use.

We all started trying to do this from a young age.  Some of our “Imaginings” were actually real astral information being conveyed to us. In fact, unless you were a flat out liar, you PROBABLY had a pretty high ratio of experiencing Astral or Etheric information in what you learned to think of as imagining.    One of the things that makes it easy to be convinced that our imaginings are all untrue is the fact that Astral Energy responds to thought and will.  What’s the difference between when we imagine having a sword verses creating an astral sword?

    Out-Magining
This question makes me want to coin a new term:  Out-magining.   Imagining tends to be inward or far away on the astral. Creating the Astral sword (out-magining) is something you do to your environment around you. (imagining/out-magining… in/out. get it?)

When I imagine something, you have to go looking for my imagining in order to give me details (yes this can be done, I do it often to others).   However, when you out-magine something, it’s right in front of my face available for me to see and affect me.

Now the astral has a VERY tenuous connection with the physical. Most people can walk right though an Astral Object/Person and not even notice if their third eye is closed.   An astral object or person can affect them, but the effect will likely end up being minor unless the Astral being is VERY powerful.

Part of the rules is that to experience the astral you have to be involved in it, so if your third eye is open you will be much more likely to be affected by astral things. A ghost that makes a room feel a little creepy to other people might cause you to feel sick if you’re very open.

This works in reverse as well though.  By being deeper into the astral you can affect change there more too.

So what does all this mean?

How do I open my third eye?

    - Step 1 -
Decide to be involved in the Astral as you walk around.   Decide to accept information from a different layer to reality. It’s really that easy.  This is the “switch” I mention in other articles.  Basically, I turn the dimmer up and down by deciding how much I will focus on recognizing information in the physical layer verses other layers of reality.

    - Step 2 -
Practice, practice, practice.  Your mind doesn’t know how to communicate this information to you yet.  You need give your mind tools to create your personal astral language to receive concepts and information. Commonly this involves astral play.  Out-magine an astral ball and then give it characteristics.  Out-magine with others to help yourself create your astral language more quickly. By sharing your perceptions, you are giving each of your minds ways to understand the information.  Additionally you help each other learn when you are imagining verses out-magining.

    - Step 3 -
Determine what information helps you and what information doesn’t. There are a lot of layers of reality that don’t really apply to you at this moment.   The closer to those layers your vibration is, the more you can be affected by them.

This is why the best way to get away from a negative spirit or a Demon is to feel love (sing praise songs, pray, whatever works).  By loving, you raise your vibration to the point where their layer of reality and yours don’t connect anymore and BOOM, effectively no more negative spirit.  Sure they are still back there somewhere, but they probably aren’t ready to follow you up the scale of emotions and eventually they can’t see you anymore.  As far as they are concerned you basically ascended into light.

Little by little you will learn to focus on obtaining information that empowers you. When I’m in a meeting with a potential client, there is no point in studying the wood-grain of the desk. The important information is their words and body language.   Sure the desk, chairs and other parts of the environment can tell me a little about them, but they aren’t the most effective way to understand what I need to know.

Same thing with the Astral; there is information that doesn’t really help you. Walking by a building and feeling that a bird died by running into the window yesterday does not really help you.

My most common “useless” information regards people.  I learn details about them.  Unfortunately, I rarely have the opportunity to follow-up and see if this information is true.  What good is gaining this information if I never learn whether I’m bull shitting myself or not? Heck, I don’t even know my hit/miss ratio because most of the stuff I “learn” would be personal stuff that a person won’t exactly confirm to a stranger.

    Tricks and Spells
There are a LOT of tricks and spells out there to open your third eye.  I’ve used:

    • ritual third eye openings
    • flooding someone’s third eye with energy
    • opening the 3rd eye chakra
    • Rub Essential Oils (Rose, Frankincense, Lavender and others) on 3rd eye
    • Tiger’s balm on 3rd eye (VERY EFFECTIVE!)

In the end however, remember that you are essentially pushing yourself to focus on other layers of reality than the physical. It will STILL be necessary to learn to understand your own astral language and focus on information that benefits you.

  • Meditation/Visualization

    Meditation/Visualization

Most Magick requires focused will. There are many ways to improve your will. There are also many ways to improve your focus. One of the few ways I know to improve both at the same time are Meditation and Visualization techniques.

In fact clear Visualization is a prerequisite for powerful Astral work. You MUST be able to hold a clear image of what you want in your mind to solidify it on the astral plane.

Additionally meditation has the benefit of pushing you to stop and listen to your own thoughts.... and the thoughts of the less corporeal who want to be heard.

There is a clear difference between the two. Meditation as I am using it here is the concept of either focusing your thoughts on a topic to fully understand it OR to relax your mind toward having no thoughts of your own. Visualization is the act of “day dreaming” a experience or story.

Both are actually easy to practice. Let's start with Visualization.

I normally don't include exercises with articles; however, chapter 13
is simply an introduction to the exercises so... here you go! :-)

    Exercise 13-1: Scene Visualization
Read a couple paragraphs in a good (usually fantasy/science fiction) book. Now close your eyes and using the information in what you read, start creating first a detailed picture and then a video of the exact experience. When you get to the point where you can see, hear, smell, taste and feel exactly what the author is describing and fill in the blanks of what they don't describe, you are ready to do powerful astral work.

    Exercise 13-2: Focused Meditation
Choose a situation in your life. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Now sit or lay down to think about that situation and only that situation for 5 minutes. Little by little, at your own pace increase this number upward.

As you learn to focus your mind on a topic for longer periods, you will find that you stop having new thoughts on the topic. At this point, allow your mind to be quiet while you wait for further thoughts on the topic. This is one of the most effective ways to find solutions to problems. Focus on the problem, think about it until you fully understand it and then wait for an idea concerning it to pop into your head.

    Exercise 13-3: Relaxed Meditation Exercise
While this is the exact opposite of the exercise above, it is almost identical. I recommend you set a timer here as well to bring you back.

In a comfortable, but sleep unlikely position, sit down and put your mind into neutral. Decide to stop giving any of your thoughts power. As they enter and leave just let them be. Float in the stillness of experience. Relax into your breathing, into your heartbeat in your ears. Little by little as you are ready relax your mind more and more do so. Allow your thoughts to be less like sentences and more like feelings... and then recognitions of truth, until the one truth that rings through your entire consciousness is “I am.”

In this “I am” consciousness there are no thoughts or emotions. There is simply the rightness and sense of being of the “I am.”

Return from it when you are ready.

  • Shielding - Why, What and How to Build Shields

    a picture of a shield

Oh the stories... Shielding.  The most overspoken and underused magic.  If you're reading this chances are you know 30 different ways to shield and your way is the right way.  I agree.  Your way is the right way... except I know a better way and so do you.

Let's be clear.  Shielding (as most people know it) is an astral action. mp;nbsp; Astral work is very much about thought.  If you have a shield you like, you have found a way of thinking that does a great job for you.  Why stop there?  If you are silly enough to hold onto the idea that there is one truth... well then, you deserve to get your ass kicked by something that can think around your box.

This is a very complex universe.   You don't get it, I don't get it.  The Theorems of information basically  show that you cann't understand information without BEING that information.  In otherwords you will NOT understand the universe until you are the universe.   A truth of course is that you are,.but for some strange reason we have chosen to believe ourselves limited.  Whatever....  limited.

So...  We like to fit ourselves into a pretty little box, call it our reality and then act as if it will cover everything we need.  I guess the answer to whether that works depends on what we choose to manifest.  The likelihood, is that if you're reading this you have decided to manifest a reality where it doesn't entirely work.  Where you are open to the idea that you do NOT have everthing handled and learning a new trick or 200 is useful..

The fundamental trick you need to use to apply different shielding concepts is to be able to accept truth in multiple different concepts.   Get to the point where you can see the universe as: An Epic Good vs Evil Battle, a neutral universe where there is only energy, a loving universe where everything is love and persons who forget it, a embattled universe where the 52 bicycle kings and the great trickster hold sway....  When you can switch perspectives like a frat boy switches alchohols... THEN you can utilize different shielding tricks to stop the most intelligent and least sane Astral Badass in their tracks.

Little by little I will post shielding ideas, perspectives and of course, how to get past them.  This isn't a one size fits all universe... except when it is.  So.  Check out the Shielding IDEAS and how I've used them and figure out how you can use those perspectives to empower you.

  • Telepathy (Psychic Communication)

    man using telepathy

Psychic Communication with telepathy isn't as hard as you'd think. Thoughts seem to happen at a vibration level higher than the astral. Let's call this level the “Aether.” As far as I can tell astral manifestations are basically the consequences of thought. However the astral seems to be able to effect thoughts as well.

    Astral Effecting Thoughts
The other day I was trying to do ritual and there were a few spirits in the space that disagreed with my ritual. I wasn't scared of them, but while I was doing my work I was having a hard time accessing the thoughts I desired. It took work to get around the “block” they had put up for me to remember the chant I wanted in order to complete the ritual.

My way of getting around the block was to manifest a different astral reality. They had manifested “Scott can't remember.” I chose to manifest: “This information is information I know and I am remembering it.” Because I have a physical body with a brain in charge of an awesome energy body (the human body) I won that manifestation debate. This kind of situation is a form of astral combat which you learn more later.... but on to the here and now of psychic communication using Telepathy.

    Why Telepathy Works
Thoughts are NOT secret. They are they are very loudly broadcast across the Aether and anyone with a will can listen in. If that weren't enough, the vibrations of the Aether which are thoughts exist within the limitations of time... and thus can be accessed by anyone at anytime (before, during AND afterwards).

However... the act of creating an astral body to hear those thoughts outside of the present in-time moment is a bit advanced right now. File that thought away for later.

These vibrations of the Aether can be received by any astral structure intended to receive it.

I believe the brain is partly an antenna which we shape throughout our life to send/receive the thoughts we specifically prefer. Here's the interesting part though. Our brain is both a specialized and a generalized tool. As we grow up we spend a lot of time learning to recognize and understand our own thoughts (specializing). We can also spend time learning to understand and identify thoughts that aren't ours (generalizing).

The good news is that most of us already generalize.

    • If you've ever gone to a concert and lost yourself to the crowd and the music, you've experienced telepathy.

    • If you've ever ridden a horse or run with a dog and both of you zigged and zagged at just the right times in sync, you've experienced telepathy.

    • If you've just suddenly known how to do something, you've experienced telepathy.

    • And of course, if you've ever heard someone's thoughts... you've experienced telepathy.

The process of telepathy is this:

    1. Accept that all thoughts are public domain. Sometimes they are so unusual or complex that we have to REALLY readjust to understand them, but they are there and accessible to us.

    2. Recognize that you CAN hear them.

    3. Use cues like the “taste” (affected by soul name), the emotional “shape”, the content of the thoughts and more to identify the specific thought stream.

    4. Let go of your personal perspective and allow yourself to accept the thought sources perspective in order to begin understanding their thoughts. This will include:

      1. Temporal Perspective: When is now? How are they perceiving time?

      2. Location: Where are they? How does everything look, sound and feel where they are?

      3. Knowledge: A person who is a master of Kendo will have thoughts which include incredible complexities of swordplay and rituals of study. These thoughts will not make sense to you unless you divine them.

      4. Divine what you don't understand: In truth divination is far more useful to you than telepathy. Divination tends to come in a way you are personally able to receive and doesn't tend to have large chunks of knowledge that you don't understand.

Deep Telepathy is Obvious and Intrusive
Direct Connection Telepathy is a form of resonance. To access thoughts you must vibrate them. Any semi-competent telepath will recognize the moment you connect with their thought-stream.  During your time listening you both effect and are effected by their thoughts.
Any thoughts you broadcast while connected seem like their thoughts and this empowers the abuse I mention in the next chapter.

Surface Reading (Thought echos on the Astral)
There is a way around this though. Rather than connecting deeply with their thought stream you can choose to rehear their thoughts in the astral. Unfortunately the difference is a difference in clarify. The astral just doesn't keep all of the nuances of a direct listening. I don't quite know how to explain it right now, but try both when you are ready and maybe you'll be able to find better words than I did.  The main difference will the that with a surface read you "remember" the thoughts from their aura and with a deep read you become attuned to them and a bond is formed.

As always there is more, but this should cover the basics and get you started in practicing your telepathy.

  • Using Aura, Chi, Ether and Chakras

    depiction of seven major chakras

Aura, Chi and Chakras... These three words are probably the most overused words in modern metaphysics.  Unfortunately these relate to three very real and powerful concepts so we'll have to risk the shame and mention them.

Chi or Qi (pronounced either Chi or Ki)
Chi is a shared eastern term for a form of energy that runs through your body in lines called Meridians.  Along these lines there are places where the chi creates vortexes called "Chakras" (Literal Translation: "Spinning Wheels").  Affecting these Chakras can effect other things along the meridians. For example, if one of the meridians connects to your Gall Bladder you can affect the Gall Bladder through a Chakra on that same Meridian on your hand.  This is one of the tenants of eastern chi based medicine.

Most people believe that living beings create chi.  Some believe it's from the breakdown of Jing (An essential energy that they believe is given in limited amounts at conception and runs out at the same time you die from old age).

    The 7 Major Chakras
There are THOUSANDS of these minor Chakras on the body, however there are a few more popular Chakras commonly called the "Major Chakras".  Wikipedia has a great article about Chakras.   Until you study more though, the 7 major chakras are:

    1. Top of the head (Spirit)
    2. Behind the Lower Forehead (Third Eye, Perception)
    3. Throat (Communication)
    4. Center Mass - Heart (Emotions)
    5. Solar Plexus (Initiative, Expressions of Power)
    6. Belly (Survival, Living Situation)
    7. Base of Torso between the Legs (Reproduction, Primal expression)
    8. --Not Commonly Believed in-- Between the Feet (Grounding)
    9. --Commonly Believed in, but not Commonly Worked as Major -- Palm where the Hand bends (Working, Giving and Receiving)

    The Aura
Now the Aura is another concept that's tied to this.  There is a second body which overlays the Physical Body commonly called the Energy Body, The Astral Body and/or the Etheric Body.   Just as science breaks the Atmosphere down into the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and Exosphere, I tend to believe that we can break the body down into: The Physical Body, The Etheric Body and the Astral body.

    The Energy Body (Etheric Body)
They are all the body, but for the sake of understanding we separately define them in order to better recognize their rules.  The physical body is pretty well understood.  The Etheric Body will likely need an article of it's own, but in essence (hehe) Ether seems to be a form of energy right near the border between non-physical and physical.  Just as light is a particle and a wave Ether is through effort able to be manipulated by thought, but has enough form to stick around.   When enough Ether is concentrated, it physically expresses as a clear goo which evaporates (ectoplasm btw).  I've experienced ectoplasm a couple times when I was researching shapeshifting, but most people will experience Ether as a form of energy which has substance.

    The Astral Body
This brings us to the Astral Body.   Unlike the Physical Body which has form and sticks around, and the Etheric Body which also has momentum, the Astral Body is all about Energetic Expression of Thought and Flow.  Astral is the most commonly played with energy by young Mages.  This is because if you can imagine something you can shape it into Astral form.  (If you ever run across a group of young people who go off on "giant magickal adventures" together it's likely because they are subconsciously manipulating Astral as they mutually write the story of their adventure. The astral forms have enough substance that if one chooses to perceive they can share in the story with the "astral special effects."  They are actually perceiving a dragon in front of them, because their friend imagined it with a bit of power)

What most people call Chi Balls are usually almost completely Astral.  Wait... where does Chi fit into this?

    ----V

    ------^   WOW!

I'm not solid on this, I consider both Ether and Astral as different wavelengths of chi OR I perceive Chi as Astral and Jing as Ether. It depends on which model is more useful at the moment.

    Chi Balls
You can tell whether "chi balls" are made of Astral or Etheric Energy by whether it sticks around when you stop thinking about it.  An astral ball will exist exactly how you think about it for as long as you think about it.  When your mind releases it stops existing.  An Etheric Ball has staying power.  The Ether can stick around even after its creator stops creating it.  Astral is all about modifying the flow of energy.  It is a lite enough energy that your thoughts can effect it, but it can also be effected by other things which resonate...  Your energy body does so.

    SO:

    1. Your Physical body resonates with your Etheric body
    2. Your Etheric Body resonates with your Astral body.

Most people have to work to have their Etheric body extend outside the form of their physical body, however most people's astral body standardly exists both within and surrounding a person.  The area of the Astral body which exists outside one's Physical body is commonly called the Aura.

The Aura is extremely responsive to thoughts.  If I'm interested in something, my aura will tend to reach toward it.  If I abhor something my aura will usually shrink away (Unless I'm a fighter and then you'll see it take a defensive shape).  The astral body is a series of flows guided by our Physical and Etheric Bodies, but it can also be manipulated by thoughts.  Just as it's easier to move water you're swimming in vs the water that someone else is swimming in, we tend to have pretty solid control potential of our Astral body.  This is where the chicken and the egg come in.  Just as our Thoughts, Etheric and Physical Body can effect the astral body, the astral body can effect our Thoughts, Etheric and Physical Body.

There is not a direct 1-1 correlation; however, this is why Aura Healers can help people (and how messing with someone's aura can cause physical responses).  Everything in these systems are interrelated.  If your physical body is damaged it will show up in your aura (in fact, the most common way of using auras to heal is to perceive problem areas).

This bring me to "energy healing."  I believe in it.  I use it. However, which is easier: Going to work, to earn money, to pay someone, to hire someone to chop some wood for you OR go chop wood?

YES, you can fix many things with thought and energy work.  In fact some things (Like Early Cancer and Mild Diabetes) are better healed with energy work because they are compounded by consistently held emotions and thoughts.  However, if you break a leg, go to the doctor...  Few Shapeshifters are badass enough at Etheric work to shapeshift their leg to health again, let alone some young Mage trying to effect everything through the much less directly connected astral body.  Sure, just as changing how a river flows can effect the landscape and thus the course of the river, you CAN change your body by changing your thoughts.  Master Aura healers can introduce things into your aura to pressure you to hold your thoughts in a certain way which can over time cause your body to accept the form your thoughts are holding.

However, just as a river is directed by the shape of the earth, your thoughts are also effected by your body.  If you have a broken leg it is VERY difficult to decide that you have a healthy leg strongly enough to make it so.  Energy healing IS a cure all, but it's rarely the BEST answer.  If you choose to make a lifestyle of controlling your thoughts, emotions, astral, etheric and physical body you will find that many dis-eases do not effect you to the same extent that they might effect others.  In fact, one's health is a direct expression of their magickal status.  There are some awesome Mages in ill health (We tend to forgo efforts to repair something that "isn't interfering" with our lives) however most of them will not complain about their situation.  Mages choose our reality.  If something is bothering us enough to complain about it, it's usually important enough for us to just do something about it.  Persons who are constantly requesting "help" with X,Y,Z health issues are rarely worth their magickal salt.

I have found this model can empower a LOT of things.  Little by little I'll add sub-articles to express many of them.
