Most Magick requires focused will. There are many ways to improve your will. There are also many ways to improve your focus. One of the few ways I know to improve both at the same time are Meditation and Visualization techniques.

In fact clear Visualization is a prerequisite for powerful Astral work. You MUST be able to hold a clear image of what you want in your mind to solidify it on the astral plane.

Additionally meditation has the benefit of pushing you to stop and listen to your own thoughts.... and the thoughts of the less corporeal who want to be heard.

There is a clear difference between the two. Meditation as I am using it here is the concept of either focusing your thoughts on a topic to fully understand it OR to relax your mind toward having no thoughts of your own. Visualization is the act of “day dreaming” a experience or story.

Both are actually easy to practice. Let's start with Visualization.

I normally don't include exercises with articles; however, chapter 13
is simply an introduction to the exercises so... here you go! :-)

Exercise 13-1: Scene Visualization
Read a couple paragraphs in a good (usually fantasy/science fiction) book. Now close your eyes and using the information in what you read, start creating first a detailed picture and then a video of the exact experience. When you get to the point where you can see, hear, smell, taste and feel exactly what the author is describing and fill in the blanks of what they don't describe, you are ready to do powerful astral work.
Exercise 13-2: Focused Meditation
Choose a situation in your life. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Now sit or lay down to think about that situation and only that situation for 5 minutes. Little by little, at your own pace increase this number upward.

As you learn to focus your mind on a topic for longer periods, you will find that you stop having new thoughts on the topic. At this point, allow your mind to be quiet while you wait for further thoughts on the topic. This is one of the most effective ways to find solutions to problems. Focus on the problem, think about it until you fully understand it and then wait for an idea concerning it to pop into your head.

Exercise 13-3: Relaxed Meditation Exercise
While this is the exact opposite of the exercise above, it is almost identical. I recommend you set a timer here as well to bring you back.

In a comfortable, but sleep unlikely position, sit down and put your mind into neutral. Decide to stop giving any of your thoughts power. As they enter and leave just let them be. Float in the stillness of experience. Relax into your breathing, into your heartbeat in your ears. Little by little as you are ready relax your mind more and more do so. Allow your thoughts to be less like sentences and more like feelings... and then recognitions of truth, until the one truth that rings through your entire consciousness is “I am.”

In this “I am” consciousness there are no thoughts or emotions. There is simply the rightness and sense of being of the “I am.”

Return from it when you are ready.
